The city has $415,000 in Resort Municipality Initiative funding for hardscaping and accessibility work at Station Square, and is chasing further grants for landscaping, shade structures, seating, bike parking and electrical.
Three concepts are on the table. The first makes 6th Street one-way with angled or drop-off parking, and treats the square as a summer gathering space and a winter parking area. The second makes 6th Street one-way and takes the parking out permanently, creating a year-round public space. The third permanently closes the short stretch of 6th Street between the alley and 1st Avenue and folds it into the square, keeping seasonal parking.
The survey runs to September 21 at letstalk.fernie.ca/StationSquare. There is an open house on Tuesday, September 15, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the Arts Station, 601 1st Avenue.
