Why we’re asking

Air quality warnings for wildfire smoke covered the Elk Valley, Fernie included, on July 23 and again on August 1. The smoke blew in from the Pacific Northwest. There were no wildfires in the Fernie area itself.

Category 1 campfires were banned across the entire East Kootenay from July 23. On August 8 the Premier declared a provincial state of emergency over wildfire conditions across BC, though not for anything local. The last remaining evacuation alert in the East Kootenay has since been fully rescinded, and no properties in the region are on alert or order.

Three weeks indoors with an air purifier from Canadian Tire is not a plan.
